What to Expect & How It Can Help

If you’re thinking about attending your first Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meeting, you may be feeling uncertain, overwhelmed, or even scared. That’s okay. Many people feel this way before they take that first step. You might not be sure if AA is right for you. Maybe you’ve heard things that make you hesitant, or you’re just not sure what to expect. What matters most is that you’re here, looking for help, and that means there’s hope!

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

No matter where you are in your journey, whether you’re struggling to quit drinking or questioning if alcohol is a problem in your life, AA is a place where people understand. The people you’ll meet in a meeting have been where you are. They know the fear, the doubts, and the struggle—but they also know the relief, the healing, and the hope that comes with recovery.

AA is not about judging you or making you do anything. It’s simply a space where you can listen to others, share if you feel comfortable, and see if this is something that might help you.

Your First AA Meeting at You Can Too Club

Your first meeting might feel a little intimidating, but here’s what you can expect:

  • A Warm Welcome – You will be greeted by people who understand what you’re going through. You don’t have to say anything if you don’t want to. You can just listen.

  • A Safe and Supportive Space – AA meetings are confidential. No one will pressure you or tell you what to do. It’s a space where you can be honest, without fear of judgment.

  • People Sharing Their Stories – You’ll hear others talk about their experiences with alcohol and how AA has helped them. You may relate to some of what they say—or you may not. Either way, just listening can help you start to see that you’re not alone.

  • No Pressure to Speak – If you feel like sharing, you can. But if you’d rather just sit and listen, that’s completely okay.

  • A Message of Hope – No matter how hopeless you might feel right now, AA is built on the idea that recovery is possible for anyone.
